These Tattoos | Road to Havana | Comfort | With Lisa before the Bell Tolls

Comfort

We threw youthful knives
into the earth
close between our naked feet
accepting invitations of experience
without flinching

And later flew motorcycles
headlampless in the dark
with only the moonlight’s deceit
to let us believe
we knew the way

We navigated foggy highways
both real and induced
without maps and exhausted
slept in the cold damp wombs
of abandoned vehicles

Our youth was shared
with sinister atoms
We named all our vermin
and learned how to fuck
our pain away

We were broken friends
and lovers with sacred scars
who could share
their damaged beauty
between desperate whispered prayers
We excused ourselves from the rest
and took our chances
worried people asking that we be home
before dark
A promise we could never keep

Tonight we dream with all the windows open
hearing sirens in the darkness
lullaby wailings
knowing
that we are never very comfortable
feeling comfortable
